It is not uncommon for them to be curious about the raft and come right under the boat!

Departing from Honokohau Marina located 3 miles (4.8km) north of Kailua-Kona, your captain will entertain you with Hawaiian folklore and Kona history as you travel along the scenic Kona coast. Every winter, the humpback whales migrate to Hawaii to mate and give birth in the warm waters. Your naturalist captain will provide narration on the whale's behavior and the hydrophones onboard allow you to listen for the whale song. There are also frequent sightings of dolphins, manta rays, turtles and other marine life during the expedition.
Time allowing, you'll get close to many lava tubes, sea caves, sea grottos and wave powered blow holes. Learn how the island of Hawaii was formed as your captain shares their knowledge about the geology of the island's lava flows.
The Rigid Hull Inflatable Zodiac vessels used are 24 feet (7 meters) in length, powered by twin outboard motors to produce a quick moving and highly maneuverable ride. The rafts are perfect for exploring the shallow coves, sea caves and lava tubes located along this coastline. Each boat can hold up to 16 passengers.
Due to the bouncy nature of the ride, the Zodiac Raft Whale Watching Adventure is not recommended for those with back or neck problems, or pregnant women. The Kona Coast has the calmest water and the fast moving Zodiac is the least likely vessel to cause seasickness.

Join the Hidden Craters Hike for a Big Island off road climb and hike up the cool and misty slopes of Hualalai volcano. 4 Wheel Drive vans carry you up most of the way to 6,000 feet (1,800 meters) elevation before you begin your on-foot ascent to visit a surreal scene of lava flows and a forest full of native birdsong. This adventure tour teaches you all about the best of Kona - beer and volcanoes!

See the geologic forces which helped create the Big Island at Kaupulehu Crater, the heart of Hualalai's last eruption. Visit magnificent coastal viewpoints, see stunning lava formations, and scramble through a lava tube on foot.
Climb aboard head off on a Big Island off road adventure up the side of Hualalai, one of Hawaii's most fascinating natural volcanic areas. The off-road 4x4 vans carry you from sea-level through a dense rain forest to a world of volcanic majesty at 6,000 ft. (1,800 meters) of elevation on privately owned lands of Kaupulehu. Get your binoculars ready for a small group adventure tour to Mauna Kea Forest Preserve for fantastic bird-watching opportunities. Visit both rainforest and dry forest habitats for a great introduction to Hawaii's wide variety of bird species, with guidance from an expert local guide and bird enthusiast.

Puu Oo Trail is a historic cattle drive route located at the 6,000 foot (1800 meters) level of Saddle Road on Mauna Loa's northeastern flank. This is the windward side of the island and is often cloaked in misty clouds. It is enchanting to be serenaded by the forest birds as you cross three to four miles (5-6 km) of lava trail. At the Humuula hunter check-in station just off Saddle Road, you'll go into the Kaohe Game Management Area and four-wheel up to nearly 7,000 feet (2,100 meters) on the western side of Mauna Kea.
Some of the avifauna you may spot along the way are iiwi, apapane, amakihi, omao, elepaio, and the elusive akiapolaau, with its unique multipurpose beak. In the dryforest, the track leads to a locked gate that is the entrance to the Mauna Kea Forest Preserve. Here, you'll have the opportunity to disembark from the van and take in the spectacular views. Then get down to some serious bird watching on foot in the mamane-naio forest.
You'll particularly focus on sighting the critically threatened palila, which feeds almost entirely on the green pods of the mamane tree. There are two other endemics of note to be found here: the Hawaii amakihi, and the local species of the Hawaii elepaio (noted for the white feathering on its head).
