This is a fully guided small group  hike to see the entry of lava into the ocean and possibly liquid flowing lava up close and personal.
This tour is not for the faint of heart and involves extensive hiking 4.5 miles in and 4.5 miles out. But it is definitely your best chance to see lava flowing and lava breakouts from Pu'u O'o vent on Kilaueau crater. The narrated tour also includes Saddle Road, Mauna Kea State Park, the 1984 lava flow from Mauna Loa, Hilo highlights and Rainbow Falls. Experience lava flows into Pahoa (2014), Kaimu Black Sand Beach, and Kalapana. Hikeapproximately 10 miles, mostly along coastal evacuation roads to see the lava flows, then up across very recent lava to look for potential breakouts of flowing lava with your experienced guide where a picnic style dinner on the lava is included.

Leave your Kona or Waikoloa resort or hotel in style in our new high-ceiling Mercedes Benz luxury van.  Your local guide will entertain you with information about the current, past and history of Hawaii as you climb initially to the height of 2000m or 6500 feet.  First we'll make a brief

Our next stop will be the historic town of Pahoa, where we can see where lava met the town in 2014 and threatened her existence. From Pahoa, we head straight for a quick hike to Kaimu, previously site of the most beautiful black sand beach in Hawaii before it was covered by Pele's eruption in 1990.  We'll spend some time enjoying the new black sand beach at Kaimu and then  straight to the Kalapana trailhead to begin our hike out to see the
active flow. The hike is approximately 2.5 miles each way along a gravel road that passes near
devastated town of Kalapana and the ocean. It's not an easy hike - the terrain is level for most of it but the payoff is often breathtaking!  Recently lava entering the ocean provides a show of steam and sometimes visible flowing lava. We will also take a hike up the pali and onto the lava fields for a picnic-style dinner, photos and possible lava “breakout” moments before beginning our hike back to the van for the ride home.
