Investigate a few of the many different types of lava, including pahoehoe lava and a‘a lava! Your knowledgeable guide will teach you about the fascinating geological history of this incredible island. You’ll also check-out an expansive lava tube cave where hot magma cooled so fast it actually formed a hard “roof” over the lava as it cooled!

From there, we’ll take to a secluded and pristine black sand beach, where the sand is composed of volcanic materials and lava fragments. Frolic in the ocean, relax on the sand, or marvel at the incredible landscape as you keep a lookout for dolphins, whales and rare Hawaiian monk seals.

Be sure to check out the adjacent tide pools where you’ll find amazingly tiny micro-lobsters, extraordinary creatures the size of a pinhead that can live up to 15 years without being fed!

This guided volcano lava hike takes you on an adventure to the most current active eruption site on Kilauea volcano. Adventure to Kilauea Volcano just outside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Our company has preferred parking inside the county gates that save you at least 5 miles of hiking versus doing it on your own. Your tour guide is certified ranger trained who will lead you on a several mile hike to the current active eruption. This tour is fully narrated sharing the geology, science and cultural awareness with myth and legend stories that tie in the history of past eruptions in the area.

PLEASE NOTE: You will be walking at least 4.5 miles round trip (about 1 hour each way). This is a moderate to difficult tour rating with most of the walking on a gravel road plus hikes across the rough and uneven black lava. The return hike can possibly be in the dark. We do provide a hiking backpack geared-up with a head lamp or flashlight, water and rain poncho. The viewing of molten lava and volcanic activity may not be seen and cannot be guaranteed on any tour due to nature.

Wednesday Only – After witnessing the most memorable experience of red hot lava, your guide will drive you to Uncle Robert’s Awa Club and Farmers Market for a famous Wednesday night social gathering for tasty food, fresh produce, live music entertainment and farmers market shopping. Itinerary:

8 am 100% 1st Aid/CPR Trained Crew with Certified Safety Professionals will provide detailed safety instructions. (afternoon tour briefing 12:15 pm)

8:15 am Depart Keauhou Harbor, headed north in search of Hawaii's famous spinner dolphins. (afternoon tour departs 12:30 pm)

Swim with Dolphins:

8:30 am - 10 am Once we find a pod of friendly dolphins, we take a very cautious and respectful approach. If they feel bothered, they can be gone in a flash! Dolphins are very curious and may swim over to look at us. They are particularly drawn towards children.

Explore the Coast
10 am Head south along the Kona Coast to explore sea caves en route to Kealakekua Bay. The Captain or guide will point out interesting facts about the unique coastline of Hawaii. Waves permitting, you might be able to enter a grotto...

Kealakekua Bay
10:45 am Enjoy snorkeling in what is usually considered the BEST snorkel spot in all of Hawaii. Calm water...fish everywhere...crystal clear water.

Snack Time
11:15 am Re-board boat, enjoy fresh fruit platter and snacks while learning some Hawaiian history and culture.

Then as night falls, witness the majestic manta rays come to feed on the abundant buffet of phytoplankton that appear with the glow of underwater dive lights. Slide into the alluring Pacific Ocean, buoyed by a light board and experience the thrill of having giant manta rays gracefully glide and swoop through the waters, all within inches of you. Back on board, complete your breath-taking experience with some warm green tea on the short ride back to the Keauhou pier.

Check in at the conveniently located Keauhou Small Boat Harbor for a short safety briefing lead by one of the 100% American Red Cross 1st Aid/CPR Trained and Certified Safety Professionals. After check-in, you'll set out down the coast towards Kuamoo Bay, where you will see lava caves and enjoy watching locals and visitors do some fun cliff jumping into the beautiful deep blue waters.

Next, you will head out to sea where you will float peacefully while watching the spectacular Kona sun set on the horizon all the while snacking on sushi. After the sun has set, you'll continue your journey to the bay fronting the Keauhou Sheraton to witness the majestic Manta Rays come to feed on the abundant buffet of phytoplankton that appear with the glow of the underwater dive lights. Slide into the warm pacific ocean and experience the thrill of having giant manta rays gracefully glide and swoop through the crystal clear waters, all within inches of you. Delight in 45 exhilarating minutes of swimming with Mantas. Ride-along without snorkeling is also an option.

Finally, warm up with some green tea and enjoy the short, easy boat ride back to Keauhou Small Boat Harbor.
