Lose yourself and find your adventure while snorkeling the warm, turquoise waters off the "Forbidden Island" of Niihau. Departing from Port Allen on Kauai's southern shore, this full-day adventure offers sweeping views of the rugged Na Pali Coast, and then crosses the channel to neighboring Niihau to swim in waters just off the coast of this small, privately-owned island. Buffet lunch and Mai Tais included on the sail back toward Kauai.

Your adventure begins at Port Allen on Kauai, where you'll board a catamaran at 6am for a 7.5-hour, thrilling cruise to the "Forbidden Island" of Niihau. Enjoy a delicious continental breakfast with coffee, tea, juices, and sodas as you take in the beauty of Kauai’s rugged coastline and photograph the Na Pali sea cliffs. From here the adventure ramps up a notch, as you cross the channel to neighboring Niihau, a small privately-owned island, where the population barely exceeds 100 full-time residents.

While there is no landing on the Niihau coast, you can swim in the warm, crystal-clear waters, where visibility is sometimes as great as 150 feet. Snorkel, scuba dive, float on boogie boards, or take a turn on the water slide, and relax while dangling your feet in the water from steps on the back of the boat. Prior to departing the office in the morning, you can also rent wet suits and underwater cameras to document the adventure, and scuba diving is offered by advance reservation—no experience required.

On the cruise back across the channel, relax with a delicious buffet lunch complete with beer, wine, and Mai Tais, and your tour finishes in the early afternoon when you arrive at the dock in Port Allen.

Here you'll cruise by remote beaches, hidden sea caves, and waterfalls, and learn the unique geology and history behind these rugged cliffs.

While comfortably relaxing out on the deck, keep an eye out for Spinner dolphins that leap up out of the water, and there's always the chance they could choose to swim along the bow of the boat. In the winter months from December-April, Humpback whales arrive from Alaska to mate and give birth in these waters, and are commonly spotted either breaching or splashing on the channel crossing toward Ni'ihau.

Known as Hawaii's "Forbidden Island," Ni'ihau is home to a handful of residents who live a traditional lifestyle, and while the island itself is closed to the public, its pristine reefs offer some of Hawaii's most vibrant and colorful snorkeling. Explore the ancient coral formations and abundance of tropical fish, and then refuel with drinks and a gourmet deli lunch before journeying back to Port Allen. Bring a light jacket and expect to get wet if you sit toward the front of the boat!
